On Sunday 1st June members of the South Chiltern Beekeepers Association gathered around the two hives, both located in the wildflower meadow, to inspect the colony of bees whilst enjoying scones with clotted cream and jam.
The event was hosted by Toby and Tristan, who are both taking their first tentative steps into the mysterious and fascinating world of beekeeping and proved to be a great success.
This said there are some concerns with the current state of the colony as there were no eggs or brood in the hive. However, Toby and Tristan remain optimistic given the colony has a queen and there is abundant forage for the worker bees.
They plan to carry out weekly inspections to assess the colony’s status over the coming months. They had also planned to harvest a crop of approximately 10kg of honey at some point late summer, however Tristan has already been able to start harvesting some of what they have produced so far!
